unmerge across multiple cells

Does anyone have a work around for unmerging multiple cells in a column or across a table in Excel?

One option: Select the merged cell, go to the Formatting Palette> Alignment
& Spacing Group, Indentation & Merge, clear the Merge check.

Alternatively, select the cell & go to Format> Cells> Alignment & clear the
Merge cells checkbox there.

First option did not work well because I lose the information in the boxes.
Second option worked well - thank you.
