unread mail not in inbox

This morning my Outlook 2003 showed received, unread mail that was not in my
inbox. I have verified that I have no filters, no rules, not in my junk
email folder, and am sorting my inbox display by date, "newest on top". I
also just ran the repair utility. In addition, the unread mail search folder
said that these new emails *were* in the inbox, but when I tried to find them
in the inbox, they disappeared from the unread mail folder. They vanished
before I had a chance to read them. I'm using a POP3 account, BTW. Thanks
if anybody has some advice.
