Unread Mail Notice

When starting Windows XP, it shows "....unread messages" next to each user
account. How do I stop this? I mark all messages as read. There is nothing in
the inbox, deleted items, drafts, junk mail, outbox, or sent items, but the
unread message is still there. It does change from time to time and sometimes
it is not there at all. I would just like this notification "turned-off" if
that is possible.
