Unread messages showing as "read"

We are having trouble at our office with emails coming in an
automatically going to "read" status. The "Mark all as read" option i
not checked and we can not figure out why this might be happening. An
ideas

Are you using the Reading Pane? Click Tools>Options>Other>Reading Pane and
Examine the value of "Mark items as read when viewed in the Reading Pane".
