Win XP sp2
Fat32
MS Office 2003

I use a desktop and laptop PC.
The desktop is FAT32, & laptop is NTFS.(also XPsp2)

Normally no problems when openning Excel files taken from desktop to laptop,
but have just encountered a " file not recognizeable" error when openning a
file, which openned ok on the desktop.
Tried most suggestions from Google search....no better.
I can open other existing Excel files OK on the laptop.
The method for transfer of these files is an 8 gig memeory stick.
I have virus scanned the stick...OK
I have transfered another Excel file...unrecognizeable!
Transfered another different XL file and OK!!
Also opened MS word file OK after transfer to laptop..
All above "unrecognized" files open OK on desktop.
I am unable to track down the problem..please help.

I have backups of all files.

TIA

Try the microsoft Rever Application Tool

Start - Microsoft Office - tools - Recover Application

Copy the file to the laptop and open the file. Then run the recovery tool.

Tried Recovery app' tool, no joy....program states "unknown error have to
close this recovery app"..
Choice of reporting to Microsft..

Further checking I have noticed following: (right click properties on each
file)

On the properties dialogue boxes,(3 tabs) I discovered that the
"unrecognized" file (laptop) shows "Application Name" ONLY, under the
Summary tab, whilst all "OK" files shows "Application Name" then followed by
"Microsoft Excel"..........here I suspect lies part of the problem??

Tried Re-install of MS Office...still same.
CRACKED? Transfered the "guilty file" VIA floppy disc to laptop and opened
OK except an error message: "This workbook has lost its VBA project, Active
X controls and any other programmability feature"....which I am trying to
solve via help facility using MS office setup disc etc....still not solved.

I am not sure whether my transfer media is suspect (all scanned), in first
instant.??
