Unwanted PST files

A

Alison Hudson

Using Outlook 2002, I have created a .pst file to hold
some information temporarily. I have moved it from my
default location on my hard drive.

Outlook insists on creating the .pst file in my default
location, even though I have removed it from my File -->
Data File Management option. It reappears here at least
once a week and I have to keep removing it.

How do I get rid of the reference once and for all?

Your post is not clear and does not fit with Outlook's known behavior.
Outlook creates what and where do you see it?

Sorry if this seems unclear. I'll go through step by step.
1. Created alison.pst in my outlook archive folder
2. Moved some stuff into it
3. Went into File then Data File Management
4. Selected the file
5. Clicked Remove
6. Closed Outlook
7. Moved the file alison.pst to My Documents
8. A few days later, noticed that the file had been loaded
by Outlook with the path as the original location
9. Using Windows Explorer, opened my Outlook Archive
folder - lo and behold, there is alison.pst with no
entries and only 32K size.

Therefore, I assume that Outlook has created the file anew.

Hope this makes sense. It's bugging the life out of me
now.

Sounds like you have autoarchive enabled on a folder and it is still
pointing to the old location.

Ah. Now that makes perfect sense. Brian has it figured out.

I have tried this. I have just looked all the folders in
my mailbox, my archive which I want open and my
colleague's mailbox (which I also open) but none of the
archive settings point to alison.pst.

My archive.pst has no automatic archive settings (i.e. set
to Do Not Archive Items in this folder). The settings on
my mailbox point to my archive.pst file in the automatic
settings. This is also set as the default archive
location.

I have just found a reference to the file though. If I
choose File --> Archive it points to alison.pst instead of
archive.pst

I am not sure why, when all my other settings point to
archive.pst.

I have changed this to point to my default archive.pst
instead and changed the option to archive folders
according to their default setting. Hopefully this should
sort it out.

Many thanks for your help.

Alison Hudson.
