Unwanted white space after rotating a picture (Word 2007)

When I rotate a image (.bmp for example) that is wider than it is long
(landscape) to portrait (a rotation of 90 degrees), Word 2007 puts white
space to the right and left of my image. I am not able to resize the image
to fit my page because the white space causes it to hang off the page. This
is only an issue in documents with a .docx extension, and does not happen in
Compatibility Mode (.doc extension) nor does it happen in Word 2003. This
issue only happens when the image is place "in line with text", and not in
any other text wrapping settings.

Is there a way to remove this white space? If this is a bug, could
Microsoft please inform me about the status of this issue?

Are you able to crop out the white space using the Crop tool in the Picture
Tools - Format ribbon tab?

FWIW, I don't see that problem in the Word 2010 beta (don't have Word 2007
at present, so I can't verify that it occurs in Word 2007 here, either
though). However, this suggests that the problem might be fixed in the
upcoming version.

Could the issue be one involving a drawing canvas?

I thought about that, but he said "picture" (a .bmp), and the drawing canvas
doesn't get inserted for pictures. It's very puzzling. You would expect the
white space to be there in both rotations.

While I don't know what's going, I do have a work-around until it's resolved.

MS Office comes with a program called MS Office Picture Manager. Open the
pic with this program and rotate/resize it and save it. (I'm sure you can use
any picture editor)
The picture will then insert w/o issue.
