update 2008 12.1.2

Add me to the list.

So if we decide to use Monolingual to strip the languages that we don't need out of our programs, that means that we're not allowed to install "critical" patches? Great.

The only other thing that I can think of is that some while back I ran

I also ran the program called Monolingual to free up some hard drive
space. I wonder if that would make any difference.

Monolingual is known to cause this problem. Have a look at these blog posts:

"12.1.1 updater woes- a version of the software required not found"
<http://blog.entourage.mvps.org/2008/06/1211_updater_woes.html>

"Failure to update Office 2008"
<http://blog.entourage.mvps.org/2008/06/trim_the_fat.html>

Because you've effectively altered the installed contents the Installer
scripts can't verify the needed prerequisite applications.

The only work around is to remove and install from scratch. Be sure to
follow the instructions in the posts above.

Hope this helps!

Would you please upload that missed non-English Package to this page?
If this page doesn't accept the uploads, would you please send it to
my email: (e-mail address removed)?

The better approach would be for you to remove your current altered
version of Office (assuming you've used something like Monolingual) and
install from scratch.

When installing again, use the Office Installer's method for not
including languages you don't want.

Hope this helps!

Same routine, I can't install the latest "Update" either, for the same reasons that others have experienced.

I did not need to run Monolingual on this Office installation, as its only language is English.

Therefore, I doubt that Monolingual is the culprit.

I finally just trashed my Office application folder and reinstalled it and ran all the updates. There was one minor error during the update but probably had something to do with the newer daemons runnig while installing an older version.

Everything is running great now.

do not want to reinstall Office and the 2 updates - they are huge and take forever to install. seems a ton of people cant get this to install which tells me this patch wasnt tested appropriately.

I went so far as to do an archive and install of Leopard (without any customizations) thereby restoring all the languages. Still no luck on updating Office 2008 to 12.1.2.

* **However, I found the following post on another site this morning with a suggested solution.

The post states: "I had the same problem installing office: "No version of the software found on volume". This is what I did:

-- Download the update from MS
--Right click on the update file and click "Show Package Contents"
--Navigate to Contents -> Resources
--You need to modify the script: package_updatable. Remove these lines using Text Edit:

if not found_valid_version:
sys.exit(48)

--Save then close. Now it will update.

Don't you LOVE MS?"

I tried this "modify the script" suggestion and IT WORKED!!!
I am now updated to 12.1.2

Looking at the majority of the posts, if you followed the steps and were looking at the item I was talking about (/Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/Office/Microsoft Office Setup Assistant), then you or someone with access to your machine has run some program which is changing the original Office install.

The updater has specific checks to insure that the Office copy installed is a version that needs to be upgraded. One of those checks is in the Office Setup Assistant, and as the majority of you reported you do not have the Plugins folder in the application much less the items in that should be in that folder. If that application (Microsoft Office Setup Assistant) is not correct, then we cannot/will not assume that you have a proper install of Office.

I am sorry I have to ask you to reinstall, but you have made unsupported changes to the Office install and the result is that Office cannot be updated.

If you have the plugins folder, then please let me know what folders you have in SLT.bundle and we can examine further.

If you have a different install issue (as some allude to here), please give me a full description and I will endeavor to get you a response.

I don't want to just give workarounds, I want to alert you to what is going on and why. As it does none of any good to go over this every month, it is important to me that you understand the cause so that future updates can go smoothly (either if we have missed something OR if there is something going on with your machine and we can keep that from happening in the future).

Thanks

David

I can not get either the 12.1.1 or 12.1.2 updates to install because of the "You cannot install Office 2008 12.1.1 Update on this volume. A version of the software required to install this update was not found on this volume." error.

The Contents folder in my Microsoft Office Setup Assistant application has the following:
Frameworks
Info.plist
MacOS
Pkginfo
PlugIns
Resources
version.plist

Thanks, Randy. As I mentioned, I also need to know what is inside SLT.bundle file that is in the PlugIns folder.

Please open the PlugIns folder, select the SLT.bundle item, right mouse click and choose Show Package contents, and then please tell me what is inside the /Contents/Resources folder.

Thanks

David

Hi David -

Thanks for posting the information. Hopefully it will be as helpful as
intended. Oddly enough I was wondering just this morning - gas prices being
what they are - how many people also might be ripping parts out of their
vehicles to lighten its weight in an effort to get .5 mpg better gas mileage
then turn around & b**ch at the mfr when the d***ed thing won't run :)

Just for the record: About 10 minutes ago I completed downloading &
installing both the 11.5.1 & 12.1.2 updates. Both applied with *no* problem
or hesitation & all apps are running as they should. Although I fully
appreciate the frustration some are expressing I hope at least some will
realize that even if there are 50... 500 separate reports of failures there
are 10s of thousands of others that are succeeding - unfortunately, those
who have no problem don't usually take the time to stop by & mention it.

David,

Inside the slt.bundle: Contents (folder), then

info.plist
MacOS (folder)
Resources (folder)
version.plist

My installation has not been altered by me or anyone else. I have only been running Office 08 since June. I have done all the updates via the auto-updater since then. 12.1.1 won't install (same error message as everyone else).

I also saw that you want to know what is in the "resources" folder.
da.lproj
Dutch.lproj
English.lproj
fi.lproj
French.lproj
German.lproj
Italian.lproj
Japanese.lproj
no.lproj
SLT.nib
Spanish.lproj
sv.lproj

Thanks Phillip, that was what I was looking to see. For those wondering why I didn't type that myself - I have often found it is easy to miss one of these items if you are comparing lists rather than typing it yourself.

Please make sure that each folder has the following four items in it (they should all have the same date): Localizable.strings, License.rtf, License_error.rtf, InfoPlist.strings.

If that is all good, then we need to look at the other items that have been issues in the past:

1) Did you restart after the last update you installed before trying update 12.1.1? The issue here is that there is a temp file location that is written to when the installation takes place, and the Apple Installer does not always clean up after itself. Thus when the next updater runs, it tries to write to that same location, but cannot because the location is locked. A restart will clear that temp space and allow the next update to work.

2) Where is office located on your machine?

3) What is the name of the Microsoft Office folder?

4) What is the name of the various applications in the Microsoft Office folder?

5) If you launch one of the four main Microsoft Office applications, can you tell me what version number is listed in the about box (both the version number of the application - including what is in the paranthesis - and the last update version number)?

I look forward to hearing back from you, and seeing where you are having the issue and how we can stop this from happening to you with each release.

David

PS - anyone can put their email address in their post and I will write you separately to chase down your issue with Installation issues ONLY.

Also, it was my wife's birthday yesterday, so I am now offline for the next 9 hours as I take her out to celebrate it.

David,

please contact me at: (e-mail address removed)

when you say, "Please make sure that each folder has the following four items in it (they should all have the same date): Localizable.strings, License.rtf, License_error.rtf, InfoPlist.strings." I am not sure which folders you mean or why I don't have those items.

Here's the info from "About Word":
"Microsoft Word 2008 for Mac
Version 12.1.0 (080409)
Latest Installed Update: 12.1.0"

Good for you taking your wife out for her birthday!

Steps to re-install:

1) Quit all Microsoft applications (Easy way: log out/in with Shift key
down to disable any startup items.)
2) Drag the Microsoft Office 2008 folder to the Trash.
3) Empty Trash.
4) Reinstall Office 2008 from your original installation disk. See details
here:

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/install/print.html>

Some have indicated this is a huge and will take forever to install. I'm
guessing less than 30 min and I think that's more than generous.
