Update fails

When I try to do the Office 2003 update on the MS website,
I can download the update correctly but the install
fails. This is for all of the Office 2003 updates
currently available (word, outlook, etc.) Is anyone else
having such a problem? All of the apps seem to work fine
but won't update. The CD is in the CD drive.

I've seen this, and my recollection was that I got a numeric error code.

I looked up the error code, and found a KB article which basically said
"Call Microsoft to learn how to fix this."

I thought Ha.....

However, I checked, and for whatever reason--not sure whether this is
everyone, or just my luck, but there was email support available for my Word
2003. I submitted a request, and got back an immediate answer that if I
went to Office Update, all my problems would be solved.

I wrote back: "Not so fast--that's what I already did, as I wrote
previously--what's the real story", and got an excellent detailed reply from
a support person giving all the registry keys relating to previous versions
of Office which might not be properly removed, and suggesting that I remove
them all, and then reinstall 2003, and all would be well.

I elected to pick and choose, and leave the ones I thought related to 2003.
And it worked, perfectly--didn't need to reinstall, and updates flowed once
again.

So--if your issue is the incomplete removal of a previous version of office,
this is one way to get it solved, if free online support is available to
