I emailed MS support and was given this fix. It worked
for me. Now I can update without problem. I am usin
Office XP with XP home addition.

Fix from microsoft:
I understand the problem to be: You get the "Error!
Unable to check for updates on this computer Help" page
when accessing the Office Update site. The operating
system is Windows XP Home Edition. If I have
misunderstood your concern, please don't hesitate to let
me know.

Based on my experience, this problem can occur if some
related registry keys have corrupted. Please follow the
instructions to manually delete all the registry keys for
Office products. I understand the whole process can be
time consuming but they are crucial for us to effectively
resolve this situation. I have handled similar cases in
the past, and we have solved the problem in the manner I
have suggested. Please work with me by trying the
troubleshooting steps and we will resolve this problem
together. To do this, follow the steps below:

(a) Quit all running programs.

(b) Click Start menu-> Run, type "regedit" (without the
quotation marks) in the Open box and press Enter.

(c) Delete the following registry keys if they exist:

Thanks for the fix - the problem with Office Update was
frustrating me and now it works perfectly. A bit tedious
to do but got the job done.

Thanks, Charlie

This is the manual way of what Windows Installer Cleanup and the utility
msizap.exe (look on support tools). WIC does not work with XP, only with
W2k.
There is a utility name msizap.exe from Support\Tools\Suptools.msi, which
are located in
the XP CD. It is also present on the same place for W2K. Be aware that there
is a new Support tools 4 for W2K/SP4.
You must install them (all), if you have not. There is a setup.exe
Them you have to look for the GUID of the program you want to uninstall,
with RegEdit at:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall.
The GUID are the long numbers you will see. Click on each one, until you
find the owner in the Rt panel .
I would save a security copy of the registry. Saving the key is not enough,
and I am not sure a restore point is sufficient. Delete nothing with
RegEdit!!!!!
Then, in the Command Window (CMD) you will type:

<path>\msizap.exe T! {GUID}.

My GUID for Office XP was:
{91110409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0050048383C9}
Not sure if yours will be the same.
This is executed quite rapidly and will errase all the registry entries for
the selected program (Office XP), creating a log file in TEMP
I am glad I learned about msizap.exe, because is applicable to any program
as long as you find the GUID.
Cheers.

I am having the same problem (and received the same
response from microsoft) when updating Office XP to Office
2003. The thing about this fix that bothers me is...when I
installed Office 2003, I did it as an "upgrade" in order
to preserve all my settings & Add-Ins. If I use this fix,
will I lose all my Office XP settings?

restart the junkmail filter)

I am the registered owner of the installed copy of Office
2000 Pro. When trying to download MS Office sp-2 I'm being
directed to a page that informs me that I'm not authorized
to view the page using the credentials I supplied. Several
changes have occurred since the original installation
including Cable IP service, new email address and a Zone
Alarm PRO fire wall has been installed. But as this
message string also points to registry corruption as a
possible cause. Before I go down that path, do you have
any idea of what "credentials" Office update uses to
varify permission to access the update site and how I
would go about confirming the stored info is up-to-
date?
