Naomi,
You've reached the PowerPoint for Mac newsgroup
and web forum. This is a community of users,
most of whom are just plain old PowerPoint users
who have nothing to do with Microsoft, who want
to chip in to help others with their questions
on how to use the software.
If your question doesn't concern PowerPoint,
you're unfortunately in the wrong place. In fact,
you shouldn't post phone numbers or e-mail
addresses here at all - this is a public forum,
and you will probably get spammed.
That having been said, it seems like you might
be trying to upgrade your roommate's copy of
PowerPoint to a newer version - is that right?
I don't think you will need to know the serial
number for the old copy of PowerPoint, but you will
certainly need the new version's serial number.
If you purchased a licensed copy of the software,
it should be somewhere on the disc package or
paper cover.
You will also probably need the login password for
the computer (Mac OS X), to install the software
and make the update. If you don't have that, you
may need to reset the OS login password.
Have a look at the instructions on the Apple website
at the address below for details.

I've never personally done this, so I cannot
guarantee success, or that you will not lose any data.
Proceed at your own risk. Call your nearest Apple
dealer for customer support on resetting your
password if you need help.
This brings up another question: you said that the
computer has OS 10.3 installed... what version of
PowerPoint or Office are you trying to install?
Office 2008 requires Mac OS X version 10.4.9 or later.
It won't work with Panther. Office 2004 will run on
the machine, however, provided you have enough
hard disk space and memory installed. Check the
system requirements page before installing.

And remember... in the future, be EXTRA CAREFUL of
where you post your phone number and e-mail address
when you're online. Unless you are on a secured
HTTPS connection with a known server, and you
are fully aware of who you are contacting, what
information you are giving out and why they need it,
my advice is to avoid giving out any information at
all.
Good luck,
Jeff
