Updates allowed in summary tasks

I have found that it is possible to update %Complete
values in summary tasks. I did not think this was
possible, as summary task values are calculated values
from the underlying tasks. When this happens, how does
Project recalculate the %Complete values of the underlying
tasks? Or, is this a malfunction?
Thanks.

Being able to update the %Complete is not a "bad thing" since %Complete
simply refers to the elapsed duration of the tasks and not the work
accomplished.

Project simply takes the start and finish dates for the summary task
(derived from the earliest start and latest finish of the tasks it is
summarizing) and, based on the %Complete which you entered, it determines
the date that has been reached. It then uses that date as the "current
date" and for each task it calculates the %Complete based on that tasks
start, finish and "current date".

This is very similar to selecting tasks and clicking on the Update As
Scheduled button on the Tracking toolbar.

Your answer makes sense. Thanks. I will do some testing
with your explanation in mind, and watch for th eresults
to develop.
Many thanks!
