Updates to Office 2004

dmtgs

I'm running OS 10.4.7 on an Intel iMac 20" and have Microsoft Office
2004 (vs. 10.1.6).

I've downloaded, but have not installed, the following updates:

Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac 11.3.0 Update
Office 2004 for Mac 11.2.1 Update
Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac Service Pack 2
PST Import Tool for Entourage 2004 for Mac
Microsoft Entourage 2004 Junk E-mail Filter Update 1 (11.1.0)
Microsoft AutoUpdate for Office 2004 for Mac
Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac Service Pack 1 (11.1.0)
Microsoft Office 2004 Deployment Documentation
Business Bright: Entourage Signatures and Backgrounds
Creative Expressions: Entourage Signatures and Backgrounds
Powered by Entourage: Signatures and Backgrounds

My questions are:

Should I install the updates in chronological order from the earliest
date of release?
Are there any updates that are not recommended to use?

Thanks,
dmtgs

Hi,

the 11.3 update is a combo update, which means that you will not need to
apply most of the updates you've downloaded. My advice would be to apply the
11.3 update and then to run the Microsoft AutoUpdate application in your
Applications folder to see if you need to install any other components that
may be missing.

Michael, thank you very much for your rapid response. I took your
advice and downloaded the 11.3 update. But when I try to install the
update (no other applications are running) I get the message:

"The installer could not locate the correct version of the software
required to install this update. See the Read Me file included with
this installer to determine if your software meets the requirements for
this update."

I've read the Read Me and everthing looks to be fine. After the
original installation of Office 2004, I moved the entire folder from
the harddrive to the Applications folder. When I tried to update to
11.3 and got the above message, I moved the Office folder back to the
harddrive folder and restarted. Again I got the same message. I
downloaded the update to 11.1 and had the same problem.

The original installation was complete and I haven't changed or moved
folders from the main Office 2004 folder. Also, I updated from
Office:Mac not long after Office 2004 was released.

Any other suggestions?

First of all, you need to make sure that it really is Office 2004 you're
using, since you also mentioned version 10.1.6 in your original post.
Version 10.1.6 would indicate that you are using Office v.X instead, and in
that case, you will not be able to apply the Office 2004-only 11.3 update.
This would also explain the message you're getting.
I've read the Read Me and everthing looks to be fine. After the

I will need to get more details on this. You say that you "moved the entire
folder from the harddrive to the Applications folder". From where did you
move it? When you perform a standard install, you are instructed to copy the
Office folder straight into the Applications folder, and if you do a
customised install, the installer should do that for you.
The original installation was complete and I haven't changed or moved
folders from the main Office 2004 folder. Also, I updated from
Office:Mac not long after Office 2004 was released.

If you are truly using Office 2004 and you have moved the Office folder
around, then you may have to remove Office and reinstall it, depending on
your answers to my questions above.

Michel, I am SO sorry. I do have Office X on this computer. I thought I
had already upgraded to 2004 (which I do have). You've resolved my
problem! Now I will do the upgrade :)

Office 2004 installed and updated to 11.3 flawlessly. All programs
working just fine.

I need to explain that my iMac was replaced in July. When I installed
my applications on the new computer, I forgot to install Office 2004.

Your help and patience is very much appreciated.

Some users have reported that this problem was solved by using the
Apple10.4.8 Combo updater from the Apple web site rather than using Software
Update. Re-install it, repair permissions & restart, then try the 11.3
updater from Mactopia again.

If this fails, you might need to do an archive and install of the OS.
