Or is there a patch to upgrade to XP (for a reduced price or Free) ?

You must buy XP. There is a discount for having qualified software,
and Office97 qualifies; but it's certainly not free.

Microsoft is currently selling Office2003 and you may not be able to
buy the older XP version directly from Microsoft.
