Can anyone tell me if I can use my current product key from my Microsoft
Office Small Business to purchase an upgrade to Office 2007 on my new Vista
O/S computer. I plan on disabling my old PC. Would I have to install the
older version on my new pc and then do the upgrade online

Hi Fred,

If you have Office 2000, XP/2002 or 2003 Small Business Edition CD you can use that as a qualifying product to purchase an upgrade
edition of MS Office 2007 (http://office.microsoft.com/suites)
(you don't need to install the older version of Office first to upgrade)

You can download a 60 day trial edition of Office 2007 from
http://trymicrosoftoffice.com as well, but the product key for the prior version only works on that product and version.

If you want to move the old version from one PC to another you can do so if it's a retail copy but not if the letters 'OEM' are part
of the product ID in Help=>About in Word for the earlier version. OEM products are tied to a particular machine.

I have a new pc with Vista (no Office installed) and loaded Office Small
Business 2007 (Upgrade). I did not load prior versions of Office. The
product loaded successfully but product keys were rejected. The products
will load and run but I am prompmted for a product key at every startup.

My path has been Office 97 Small Business Edition, then Office XP
Professional, and then this 2007 upgrade. It is said that any Office XP
suite except Student/Teacher edition is eligible for this upgrade.

What steps should I take?

Hi Pat,

If Office 2007 installed successfully and it was an upgrade package, I'm assuming that at some point it asked for a product CD for a
qualifying product (unless there was a copy of MS Works included on the new PC)?

Once past that upgrade check the package is pretty much a standalone. Is this the 25 digit MS Office product key from the package
sticker, or ??? or is it asking for you to activate the product?

Hi, the request now is for a "product key ... for ease of validating your
Microsoft Office license" and occurs for each startup of an office product
(in fact, they shut down overnight forcing a restart of the product which
means I have 19 days to find my answer). The data entry space provides for 5
blocks of 5 characters.

My Programs list shows a "Microsoft Works Task Launcher". I guess I did
get Works with the new PC.

Because of your response to a prior questioner, I expected to see a request
during installation for me to insert the install disk from my earlier
version. That never occurred. The installation went to completion but asked
for a product key (noting that I did not have to input it at that time but I
should). I did not enter a number at that time expecting the prompt for the
older disk.

I now have three product keys - one from the original Office 97 which is
shorter than 25 characters, the XP which is 25 char, and the 2007 also 25.
Neither of the 25 char keys are accepted.

PROBLEM SOLVED.

New PC had a trial version of Office in addition to Works. Uninstalled
trial Office and key from upgrade product was accepted.

Thanks Bob and to all the others who post to this discussion group. I have
gained a lot from reviewing the posts.
