upgrade vs full version

I have MS Office on my computer and have purchased a full version in stead of
an upgrade. The Office on my computer came with it and is branded by Dell.

My question is can I install the full version I have purchased on my
computer without loosing the documents I have from the older version or do I
have to buy the upgrade?

I like the idea of keeping the full version.

Thanks

Yes you can.

The difference between the full version and the upgrade version of the same
edition of Office is the installer not the included applications. Installing
the upgrade gives you the same result as installing the full version.

If the pre-installed OEM Office that came with your computer is an Office 97
to Office XP version, then it is a qualifying product for an upgrade to any
edition of Office 2003.

If the pre-installed OEM Office is a Office 2003 edition, then it is not a
qualifying product for an upgrade. If it is a trial version of Office 2003,
then you should un-install prior to installing Office 2003.

Uninstalling Office, upgrading Office or installing a full version of Office
does not itself effect your documents. However, these is always the
possible computer or hardware failure during the process. So, you still
should have a backup of your documents to be safe.

Thank you Don MI.
What I have is Windows XP Pro OS.
I have MS Office 2002 and purchased
MS Office 2003 Full Version.

From what you have said, I believe it is safe to
install the 2003 full version without incident
of loosing files.

Will this overwrite the 2002 version or do
I need to remove the 2002 version first?

(Thanks, I have tried to read so much on this,
it is all jumbling up on me now.)

They install in different folders. Office XP {2002} installs in Office 10.
Office 2003 installs in Office 11. Expect for Outlook you can have both
versions installed. You cannot have Outlook 2003 installed with Outlook
2002. I have not installed a full version of Office 2003 {only upgrade}.
When I installed Office 2003 {upgrade}, the installer detected the prior
version and asked if I wanted to delete it. The installer than copied my
settings {such as email and add-ins} into Office 2003.

Unistalling Office XP requires only a short time. So, if you are uneasy just
do it from Add/Remove Programs. Un-installing Office XP leaves your
documents and data files intact.

If you install Office 2003 and Office XP is not un-installed during the
installation, you can always do so later. At worst, you may need to do a
Help, Detect and Repair or a Repair on Office 2003.
