I upgraded to XP SP2 and now my excel files can't be opened. When I try to
open them it gives me a whole bunch of funky "y"s. I did back up all of my
documetns EXCEPT these (of course!). Any suggestions or are they goners? I
can open up the backed up Excel files from the CD, but the files on the hard
drive appear to be corrupted.

I think I'd copy a few of those excel files to another pc to see if that other
pc could open them.

If it can, then maybe it's time to do a reinstall.

Is there any chance you opened your workbooks in MSWord and saved them as word
documents (even with a .xls extension)?

That could be big trouble. Here's hoping you didn't.

And if the file can't be open on the other pc, ...

You may want to try OpenOffice. If the file is corrupted, OpenOffice may be
able to open it.

http://www.openoffice.org, a 60-65 meg download or a CD

And if the file is corrupted and is really important, there are commercial
recovery services. I've never used it, but you might want to check into:
