Upgrading to 2003 from 97 on new machine

I have a new machine on which I want to install office 2003 pro - I have
office 97 (full version) on my old machine which I will throw away. I was
intending to buy 2003 upgrade to do this but was wondering is there any way I
can get the upgrade to work without installing 97 on my new machine first;
alternatively what is the minimum I can put on the new machine in order for
the upgrade process to see a previous version.

Office 97 (or other upgrade 'qualifying product') does not need to be installed to use the Office 97 upgrade set, but you would need
to have the qualifier CD/disks available whenever you were to install the Office 2003 upgrade for it to 'look at' to be sure you met
the upgrade qualification mark.
