Upgrading to Office 2003 Small Business Edition

Four years ago I bought a new PC and installed Office XP Small Business
Edition. In documents created on my old PC running Office 95 I had typed many
foreign characters and symbols from the Character Map. All these chars were
replaced by odd symbols or parenthesis when I saved them in Office XP and its
taken me ages to find and replace them - still finding them!

I am about to install Office 2003 and would like to be reassured that same
thing won't happen again or are there precautions I can take before
uninstalling Office XP?

Don't uninstall Office XP until you are quite happy with Office 2003.

Office 2003 will give you an option whether or not to uninstall/remove
old version of office. Just select No.

Thank you Uncle Bill but I don't think my Dimension will survive 2 Office
programs. I'll just make sure everything is printed. Do you have any idea
why the chars didn't make the transition from 95 to XP?

Hi Chrisan,

There are several possibilities. Assuming that you have checked that the default printer in Word under File=>Print is one that
supports true type fonts.

It's possible that there are one or more fonts that you had previously that are not available, (with a problem document open in Word
check
Tools=>Options=>Compatability=>Font Substitutions
or that the documents used symbol fonts that looked like alphabetic 'regular' text,

or that there is a language text setting mismatch, or that a particular language, if you're using more than one, isn't enabled in
the Microsoft Office Language Settings Tool.

Thank you Bob, your reply is very helpful but I am now very confused. I'm
writing a book on philosophy and have used many of these characters in
referencing text. I thought one simply clicked Insert Symbol and selected the
character from the map.
I have changed my printer 3 times in 4 years and now on my 4th. I just
assumed printer would be compatible. I will spend some time researching what
you have said. Again, thanks.
