upgrading Word Xp to Office 2003

I inadvertently purchased Office SE 2003 upgrade while
requesting an upgrade from MS Word Xp to MS Word 2003.
The upgrade to Word Xp was no in stock so the sasles
clerk offered me MS Office SE 2003 upgraed. The sales
person didn't inform me that the upgrade could not be
istalled unless I had the previous version of MS Office -
not MS Word Xp. Having opened the packag, STAPLES will
not allow me to return the software. I am now stuck with
the product unless I purchse the full previous version
of MS Office. Is there a method by which I could still
install the upgrade - having MS Word Xp on my computer -
without going out and purchasing the previous version of
Office?
