Or does it play havoc with the setup of the leftover programs?
Any "leftovers" work fine, at least in my experience.
The Office installation routine looks for prior versions of Office
*components* and lets you be selective about which older components you
replace or keep: (example: you can chose to keep an older Access version
along with the new version but replace/remove all other "priors".)
AFAIK, it doesn't offer to remove components unless you have chosen them for
installation. Likewise, as Milly said, installation doesn't even offer to
remove FrontPage since FrontPage isn't being replaced.
Installing an Office upgrade may do a limited uninstall of the prior version
(based on your selections), but seldom will it be as thorough as doing an
uninstall of the prior version.

Wouldn't that be a good thing tho? If you still needed FP and were willing
to use FP2000? Or does it play havoc with the setup of the leftover
programs?

Except that installing over the previous version will not remove programs
that are not included in the Upgrade version, such as Front Page. It is
the
cause of many questions we all see here daily.
To the OP, if you do not need any of the Office 2000 programs, uninstall
it
as long as you still have the physical media to "show" during the upgrade
installation. If you don't have the Office 2000 CDs, then go ahead and
install over the prior installation.

After furious head scratching, JoAnn Paules [MVP] asked:
| If it is an upgrade version, you can let the old version in. I think
| you're given an opportunity to choose whether you want to keep or
| overwrite the old version. (It's been a while since I did that so I
| forget if it was Office or another program.)
|
| If you don't need Office 2000, just overwrite it and run Office 2003
| by itself. Uninstalling is not necessary. Just back up your important
| documents first. (Better safe than sorry.)

|| Should I unistall 2000 first? Or, just load 2003 of top of the old
