I have a Website I created with Front Page but after reinstalling Front Page
on my new computer I cannot open it, can even browse to it with Front Page.
Does anyone know if I can create a blank WebSite with Front Page, then copy
the files from my original into the blank one, and if so what problems I am
apt to have. It seems crazy that I can't simply open the old files but so
far there does not appear to be anyway to do that.
Thanks,
John Pierce

John, I just saw this post plus the post you made earlier yesterday. I
had a lot of problems initially when I bought a new XP Media Center
computer last month (upgraded from 98SE). I solved all of my probs -
but not without a lot of grief.

What versions of FP and XP are you running? Have you read the
wecerr.txt file to see what your errors were? (the wecerr.txt is in
your Temp folder and is created to log error codes). If you plug that
entire error text (typically a 10-12 word sentence) in Google, you'll
find the exact Microsoft page dealing with the error, plus other
independent sites that have web pages dealing with that particular
issue.

Also, here's I do when I want to work with an FP 2000 site that I have
stored on a CD: I never go straight from the CD to FP. Instead I take
two "pre-steps" - (1) copy the entire FP folder from the CD to a new
folder in whatever directory I want on my PC. However, when you copy
like this from a CD to your PC, all of the files are automatically
flagged "read only." This is a problem with some of the files that FP
will be using, so I fix that with step 2. (2) using a program like
Useful File Utilities (Google those 3 words and you'll find the free
software I use) change the attributes of the entire folder and all of
its files - remove the "read-only" flag from all of the files in the
new FP folder. If you have a small FP site, you can do this one page
or folder at a time by right-clicking, then selecting properties and
deselecting the "read-only" attribute. But if your FP site is decent
sized or larger, then by using a program like Useful File Utilities I
can change the attributes of the entire site with just a few clicks.

Let me know how it turns out!
