I use Office XP and when I open Word or Excel and start to type anything the
"Save As" dialog box comes up and I can not get rid of it.......I will hit
cancel numerous times and it will finally go away but the second I start to
type again, the Save as box returns......

This exact thing just started happening to me. Did you ever get a fix
for this? I'm using a Dell Inspiron 5150 and this just started
happening about a week ago.

Excel does have an AutoSave add-ins and if it is loaded you'll find
AutoSave under the Tools menu. However I suspect you have an add-in
attempting to Save the workbook instead.

First check your XLStart folder and if you find any files move them
out of the folder one at a time and see if the issue occurs in Excel.
Note you may have two XLStart folders, one located in your Office
installation path and the other under your profile so make sure you
either check both or use Windows Search to locate the folder.

If you've ruled out the XLStart folder then go to Tools/Add-ins and
see if there are any add-ins loaded. To unload them remove the tick in
the check box.

Please post all follow-up questions to the newsgroup. Requests for
assistance by email can not be acknowledged.
