Urgent: backup of .pst file

Is there a way to get OUTLOOK to backup the .pst file?

Situation: I have a user whose hard disk is quickly going down the
drain. IBM has already sent him a new one to replace the one in his
Thinkpad. We have made a backup of all of his data, and it was
successful with 1 expection - his d:\outlook\outlook.pst file (we long
ago moved it out of the D&S directory).

Apparently the disk is already corrupt where the .pst file resides.

However, Outlook does still come up and run - albeit slowly - with no
noticable errors.

Simply copying the file does not seem to work.


Is there a way to get Outlook to save the .pst file into a new location
(either on the local disk, or on a mapped drive)?

Do you copy it when Outlook is closed? Or just restart the computer to make
sure there is no connection to the file. Also doublecheck to see if you are
trying to copy the right file (you never now amd all you can do is hope in
these kind of situations) rightclick Outlook Today-> properties-> button
Advanced-> field Filename.

You also may want to try to export his mails to a new pst-file on a save
location. He'll loose some views and settings but it's probably better than
nothing. There are back-up tools but all they do is initiating a filecopy
when Outlook closes. Anyway, here is the link;

You might try to use the Export feature to extract all of its contents to a new PST file, somewhere safe.

I wasn't trying to be redundant, I just wasn't sure if the OP understood what you meant since you only mentioned exporting "mails" rather than all contents of the PST, i.e., E-mail folders, Contacts, Calendar, Journal, Notes, etc.

Actually, yours was a good post - since that is exactly what I want to
do (export EVERYTHING). Unforunatelly, there doesn't seem to be an easy
way to do that - it seems you have to export everything seperately.
