Usage of "Use Remote Interfaces" in relation to MS Project Professional

Hello experts,
Need your help. What exactly does "Use Remote Interfaces - Use SOAP,
Web DAV, or SharePoint Designer interfaces to access the Web site" do
in Project Web Access > Site Settings > Permissions > Permission
Levels > Edit Permission Level screen?

Yesterday, we unchecked this box and all of my project managers could
not connect to PWA via Project professional? Rechecked and they were
able to. So, I am left wondering as to how this checkbox is tied to
opening project via project professional?

BTW, we are using PWA 2007 and project professional 2007.
