Use .dot instead of .dotx in Word 2007

Is there any way that we can set the template normal.dot instead of
normal.dotx when Word 2007 is started, the problem that we're having is that
we have over 1000 computers and only about 200 have Office 2007 installed, we
downloaded the GPO templates for AD and when we enable (Compatibility mode on
file creation, Block opening of Open XML file types) we get an normal.dotx
error and our users on 2007 cannot save any documents. What we're trying to
do is to retain compatibility with Office 2003 and force all our 2007 users
to save to .doc, .xls and .ppt format.

I appreciate any help that can be provided.

No, this isn't possible. Why are you blocking Open XML file types? I also
don't understand what you mean by "can't save documents". Can you expand on
this? It doesn't sound right. What is the error? Incidentally, you can
install the Compatibility Pack for those still using Office 2003 so they can
open/edit documents saved in the new file format. That's what most are doing
and they are setting the default Save to the 97-2003 file format.

The problem is mainly that inside our company, we need to have Office 2007
formats blocked (few customers use it, and we don't need the new features
that much).

And since Word always wants to save it's default template in .dotm instead,
the users always get a warning they cannot save the template and have to
click away a warning or two, which of course, is quite annoying.

Is there a way to set Word to use the old .dot and forego saving the .dotm,
so we can have our policy in place that blocks saving Office 2007 formats
completely?
