Use .dot save as doc

I have created word template letterheads and saved as *.dot. When I open the
letterhead and then write a letter I want to save it as a *.doc. However
when I go to "save as" command the type of file box is greyed out and my
only choice is to save it as a *.dot. If I call it *.doc then it gets saved
as *.doc.dot.
Word help and a brief google search have not yielded an answer. Any thoughts
Thank You

Howard,

You can, instead of using Save As..., can use Save option. The template
file will automatically allows you to Save in .doc format without using
the Save As feature. The Save As feature allows you to manipulate a .dot
file and rename it as something else. Also, realize that MS Word always
create a temporary file of the document you have open on your system.
That is why you see a file that looks exactly like the one you have open
with $ or ~ infront of the name whenver you go to open up another
file. It keeps people from deleting something they are currently working
on and also it gives your system a chance to save the temp file in case
of the computer crashing. Because of all this stuff going on in the
background, MS Word can be difficult to deal with when you want to do
something simple like Save the file.

You can also double-click on the .dot file and Word will open with a
new .doc based on the .dot template.

That way the .dot file can be anywhere, not just in the Word templates
folder.
