Use progress bar in Statusbar?

Is there a way to display the graphical progess bar in the statusbar, such
as that shown in the status bar during a save, for our own use?

I can show textally the progresss: "Updating task X of Y", but it would be
nice to hook into the actual progress bar, too.

Anyone know how?
