use Project and PWA for time rep. only.

Hi,

I am using PWA for time reporting only - how should i
define tasks (fixed unit, fixed work, fixed time) if i
only want the tasks appear at the individual PWA tasks
sheet?

i also want the Projects and Tasks to run for the entire
year or even longer - and just have the resources assigned
to the individual tasks - no percentage etc. but i dont
want the resources to be automatically overallocated just
caue they are sceduled to more then one task... since i
want the to be able to book on the tasks the way they want
to - thus have alltasks every day open for booking - how
can i do this?

thanks

Michael

When you assign resources to tasks in Microsoft Project, the software
calculates the amount of Work to be performed on the task, based on the
task's Duration and the Units you select for the resource. The Units value
indicates the percentage of a working day that the resource will work on the
task, and Work is measusred by default in Hours. This is the way the
software is designed to work, therefore, there is no way to assign a
resource to a task without Work being involved with the task.

When you assign resources to tasks, Microsoft Project always calculates
whether a resource is overallocated. Thus, if you assign a single resource
at 100% Units to two different tasks that occur in the same time period, the
software will determine that the resource is overallocated. You cannot
disable this feature, as this is the way the software is meant to work.
Hope this helps.

hey Dale,

thanks for the reply - it didn't help - but it explained
it - i was just hoping there is a way to dissable the
connection between overallocation and resources - cause i
just want to use Project for time reporting - not resource
management.
Thanks

You can use the system for time reporting, but the reporting is done as
Actual Work hours for each task assignment. If you care to do so, you can
completely ignore resource overallocations in the system, but it is also
likely your task dates will slip as a consequence. Hope this clarification
helps.

how can i set the system to ignore overallocation??? cause
if i just ignore it the system does not allow posting new
tasks to resources that are overallocated - thouse newly
posted will then just not show in PWA!!!

thanks for the help

You cannot force the system to ignore overallocations. And I'm not sure
what you are talking about when you say that newly posted tasks won't appear
in PWA. Whether tasks displays on a user's timesheet in PWA has absolutely
nothing to do with whether the resource is overallocated.
