User Defined Functions in XL08?

Just received my disc with Office '08 yesterday, but am hesitant to install XL because of what I've been hearing of its "new and improved limitations."

I know that tasks can be automated using Apple's automator scripts. But what about user-defined functions? I have a number of spreadsheets that utilize some calculations and logic that would be extremely unwieldy to put into a series of cells.

Can automator scripts also be used to create user-defined functions or is this also a side-effect of VBA's demise?
