UserData Registry Key Missing

A

Amanda George

I receive the following warning in my Application event log:

Source: MSI Installer
Event ID: 1004

Detection of product '{90110409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0150048383C9}', feature
'OfficeUserData', component '{C9AF9050-C8BE-11D1-9C67-0000F81F1B38}' failed.
The resource
'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Common\UserData' does not
exist.

Because of this problem, the MSI Installer keeps running configuring every
Office 2003 application when I open it. How can I repair this missing
registry key entry?

If you want to try to repair the installation the goto CONTROL PANEL,
ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS & then click OFFICE... Choose REPAIR from the available
options.

I have just looked into my registry for the key you wrote about & its a
DWORD value=1

To create that key, follow these steps:

Click START, RUN & type 'regedit' (without quotes) & press ENTER

(registry editor opens)

Now, click the '+' sign beside 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER'

Click the '+' sign next to 'SOFTWARE' & so on until you get to 'COMMON'
(Hkey_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Office\11\Common)

Click on 'COMMON (no need to expand) & look in the right. You should see 3
keys, but of course if your UserData key is missing then you'll see 2.

If UserData doesn't exist on the right, do this:

Right-click in the right pane & choose DWORD. Name it to 'UserData' (no
quotes) & click out of the name part to set that name. Now, double-click on
that UserData key, type in 1 in the value because it will be 0 (zero) & click
OK. Job done

If there is a problem with the installation log then check out the following
article:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;884290

Quite possible its been deleted if its an old installation.

I hope the above helps

I repaired the installation the other day and that did not solve the problem.
I checked for the registry entry that was missing this morning, and it was
there. When I launched PowerPoint, MSI Installer ran the Office 2003
configuration again. I looked at the log article and that doesn't apply to
my situation because I didn't do an Office update or hotfix. I only
installed Office 2003 Ent edition w/o any service packs/hotfixes. Any other
ideas? Will a complete uninstall and reinstall of Office 2003 solve the
problem?

It maybe your only solution actually, but you will need to go through the
registry keys and delete the ones left by the MSI.

I have searched Microsoft & have found your error at the following page:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/community/centers/management/msi_faq.mspx

Click Troubleshooting (link) at the top & then click on the second question
under troubleshooting.

This identifies your error, but it doesn't show steps on how to resolve the
issue.

The following document is also worth a read because it explains a little
more about that registry key & the Save My Settings Wizard:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;826809

Please post me your findings.

If you do have to uninstall, delete office folder/registry keys first before
reinstalling.

Sorry, that I am unable to help you anymore at present

Thanks for the help and references. Which Office folders and registry keys
should I make sure I delete? I assume the keys found in the "Save My
Settings" article you sent me. I think that is the route I am going to take.

Always remember to back up your registry before deleting any registry keys.

The folders I was talking about is Program Files\Office & the Application
Data office folder.

I finally resolved the problem but I don't know how exactly...I upgraded the
MSI installer from version 2.0 to 3.0...deleted a domain admin profile,
recreated it, then opened PowerPoint under that account and created a simple
PowerPoint file. Then I logged in as another user (local admin also) and I
was able to open Powerpoint w/o the MSI Installer running.
