Using Access for Student Support Services

J

James Jesse

I work for a SSS program in Texas, and we are trying to acquire software that
students can use to check in and out of our office, and that we can use to
check materials out to them. Can Access do both of these things?

Yup. Kind of loose on the requirements, but since it involves keeping track
of things (students, materials) and presumably an interface for the students
to use, Access seems well suited to it.

Have you ever worked with Access before?

Waht part of Texas....Dallas here....:)

Yes, but you would have to create the program to do it. Access is just a
tool. You have to use it to build your database/program.

I would bet there are tons of boxed solutions out there to do what you want.
You could probably spend $200 or $300 and get everything you need, while
saving yourself many many hours of work.

Fort Worth here. I work at Tarrant County College, and no, I don't have any
experience with Access. So, before I take a class on it or buy a book, I
thought that I'd ask. Do you know if we'll specifically be able to check
books and calculators and laptops out to students with it? Maybe run reports

Can you point me toward some boxed programs, or where to get them? I've done
some searching online, but I guess I don't know what terms to search for
exactly.

I don't have any experience with any particular packages. I'd think a
school library or A/V package would work.

A google search for "school library software" resulted in a pretty hearty
list of vendors.

Access can do all of that. With no experience in Access, you probably want
to follow Rick B's suggestion of buying an off the shelf software package,
or consider farming it out to an experienced Access developer that can do it
much faster than you could....

Access is a great tool to learn, but starting with something small is the
way to go.
