Using Active Directory Group when creating new group

K

Kristi

I have a few hundred users to manage, so I would like to be able to create a
new group based on a DL that I have in Active Directory. So, I added a new
group, used the Find Group functionality, and linked my group to this new
group. What exactly does this mean? Will all members of the active
directory group be added as Users in Project Server (once the sync is
complete)? If not, what good does it do for me to attach an active directory
group to a project server group?

Thanks!

If you want to use Active Directory synchronization in Project Server 2007,
you must set up this process in TWO different places. First, you should set
up AD synchronization with the Enterprise Resource Pool by completing the
following steps:

1. Log into PWA with administrator permissions
2. Click the Server Settings link in the Quick Launch menu
3. On the Server Settings page, click the "Active Directory Resource Pool
Synchronization" link in the Operational Policies section.
4. Click the Find Group button and select the AD group with which you wish
to synchronize the Enterprise Resource Pool.
5. Select the "Schedule synchronization" option and set the schedule for
the synchronization process.
6. Click the Save button.

The preceding process only synchorizes the AD group with the Enterprise
Resource Pool. Next, you need to synchronize AD with your security Groups
in PWA. Before you attempt to do this, you should set up Groups in AD that
match the security Groups in PWA, with one AD group for each PWA security
Group. This step is important and should not be overlooked. After you set
up your AD groups to match PWA security Groups, complete the following
process:

1. Log into PWA with administrator permissions
2. Click the Server Settings link in the Quick Launch menu
3. On the Server Settings page, click the "Manage Groups" link in the
Security section
4. Click the name of a security Group, such as the Project Managers group
5. Click the Find Group button and select the AD group with which you wish
to synchronize the Project Managers group
6. Click the Save button.
7. Repeat steps #4-6 for every Group listed on the Manage Groups page.
8. On the Manage Groups page, click the Active Directory Synch Options
button.
9. In the Synchronize Project Server Groups... page, select the Schedule
Synchronization option and set the synchronization schedule.
10. Click the Save button.

Hope this helps.

That was very helpful, Dale! So, it it true that when I complete this sync
that all members of the DL should appear as users in project server? Should
they also appear as resources?

Thanks!

Hi Kristi,

Next time try posting on the server newsgroup. Please see FAQ Item: 24.

Yes, they will also appear as users. The second part of the AD synch setup
places them in the proper security Groups in PWA. You must do both parts of
the setup as I indicated.

By the way, I forgot to mention in my last post that you should ask your
Project Server questions in the microsoft.public.project.server newsgroup,
as this newsgroup is dedicated to the Microsoft Project desktop application
only. Hope this helps.
