Using Application Roles with Access MDB's

I know application roles can be used with Access ADP's, but am seeking
whether any version of Access can use app roles in an MDB linked to SQL
Server (2000 or 2005). In particular, could changing the connection strings
for the table links (say, to use SQL Server Native Client) enable using an
application role?

I'm comfortable with VBA, so wouldn't mind custom coding if it would enable
this.
