using asterisks in footnotes

Is there a way to have word use asterisks to identify all
footnotes in a document? For example, the first footnote
on a page would be note 'number' *, and then the second
footnote on that same page would be note number **.
Numbering would restart on each page. I've tried and
tried, but my second note on each page is always
designated note number [cross], not **. The help menu is
no help on this and neither is the knowledge base on MS's
website.

No easily available setting, that's for sure. They have about 6 formatting
options for footnote numbers and that isn't one of them. Email
[email protected] if you want *, **, *** to be a format option in the
Note Options, though they probably won't listen since it isn't standard and
could actually cause severe difficulties if there were a lot of notes.
Asterisk, cross, doublecross, section is a pretty standard symbol rotation
for footnotes, I can't imagine this being an issue other than personal
preference.

You can, however, do it manually--when you insert each footnote, use a
Custom mark and enter the number of asterisks you want. But if you move
them around they will not reorder properly.
