i am using both the autofilter command and custom views
simultaneously. the custom views are set up using criteria
specified with the filters. i am using filter criteria in
1 column only.

in the custom views, i have checked both the "print
settings" box and "hidden rows, columns, and filter
settings" box to include in view.

in order to delete a column or columns in the spreadsheet
i must turn off the auto filter command.

once i turn it back on, my custom views "forgets" the
criteria in the filter and i must reset the custom views.
the hidden columns and print settings remain, just the
filter criteria seems to be "lost."

thank you for any help you can provide.

In xl2002, you can delete columns from a filtered range--a nice enhancement.

In previous versions, you'll have to keep track of what the filter criteria
were.

Debra Dalgleish has posted a Tom Ogilvy routine that may help you:

I just tried filtering, defining a custom view and then deleting a couple of
columns in xl2002.

Excel yelled when I tried to show the custom view. It looks like xl2002 has
trouble if you change the view, too.

Could you just hide the column instead????
