Using bullets or numbering button crashes Word 2003

The problem won't necessarily come back; it could be temporary (but there
are no guarantees of course). Losing settings, on the other hand, cannot be
avoided when you delete a user profile.

Note that my earlier suggestions in this thread should be tried first.

Thank you, this fixed our problem.

If Word crashes each time you use Bullets/Number then you may have a corrupt
key in the Registry. That's where the Bullets/Numbering settings are stored,
not your Normal template. :)

In the Registry drill down to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Word\List Gallery Presets

and delete the Gallery Presets key.

In this situation you may want to use the Registry/Export Registry file
command and export your selected branch. That way if you find the change
wasn't necessary or incorrect, you can merge the deleted branch back to to
the Registry by double-clicking the resulting file.

Hi,

Looks like Beth's solution is an effective one. I'm using Word 2007 both
under Vista Ultimate 64 and XP Pro and I have the same problem with crashes
that may be related to a custom multilevel list style I use through out a
large (44K words) document.

Would there be a downside to trying this solution on either of my systems?
If no, are the instructions the same or do they differ for Office 2007 or
Vista?

Thanks.

Help!!!

I have been having this problem for quite a while. I need help in fixing
this but I have no idea what you just said? Where is the registry? how do
you access it? Can't you break down your answer in simple steps?

Thanks Beth, you saved me time and frustration :)

BTW if it means anything, for me the problem started coming as soon as I
uninstalled Office Live Addin from my machine.

Thanks.

The Office Live add-in is known to cause problems with older versions of
Office.

I have been pulling my hair out trying to fix this problem also. I am not
computer savvy so the thought of messing about with registry keys gives me
heart palpitations! I got in touch with a Microsoft computer technician to
went through it step-by-step. First, he got me to open Word in safe mode by
clicking on Start-Run-type in "winword safe"-OK and opened up Word. I then
tried clicking on a numbered bullet and it worked OK. This determined for
him that the problem lay with the registry keys. He then asked me to click
on Start-Run-type in "regedit"-OK. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_USER then go to the
Software folder, then Microsoft, then Office, then 11.0 and rename the Word
folder to Word.old. Then go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER, then Software, Microsoft,
Office, 11.0 and again rename the Word folder to Word.old. Finally, within
CURRENT_USER go to Software, Microsoft, Office and change the Word folder to
Word.old. You should by now have changed the name of 3 Word folders to
Word.old. If you are anything like me and know how to work a computer but
not how it works this should fix the problem. Good luck and cheers from NZ

To fix the issue described in the subject line, do the following: Exit Word
and delete the List Gallery Presets key in the registry (to start the
registry editor, click Start | Run, type regedit and press Enter).

Beth,
I have this same issue (trying use bullets or numbering in Word 2003 crashes
Word imediatley). I found this post and went to my registry down the path
you suggested and can find no entry called "Gallery Presets" to delete.

I have worked with the windows registry a little bit, but I am probably a
'nub' when it comes to this stuff- so maybe I'm missing what you are saying.
In my "List Gallery Presets" folder I have the following entries:
Name Type
------------ ------------
Default Reg_SZ
Data 1 Reg Binary
Data 2 Reg Binary
Data 3 Reg Binary
Data 4 Reg Binary
Data 5 Reg Binary
Data 6 Reg Binary
Picture Bullets Reg Binary
Picture Bullets Reg Binary

Maybe it's one of the last 2 entries? Please help, this is an extremeyly
frustrating situation.

Thank you in advance, Beth!

With Word closed, delete the entire List Gallery Presets key. ("Gallery
Presets" is a typo.)

Beth -

I don't know if you are still monitoring this thread, but I have a client
that was experiencing the original issue listed here and your registry edit
worked perfectly! Thanks for the help (two years or so later!)!
