Using cross references and hyperlinks - Word 2000

My doc has lots of external references that share a common path - and it's
constantly changing (and I need to maintain multiple versions of the doc). I
also have a large number of internal cross references as well as a
hyperlinked TOC. I'm using hyperlink base for the the external links.
Problem: clicking all the internal cross refs and the TOC pops the path to
the hyperlink base. Is there any way I can have both internal cross refs and
external hyperlinks work? I REALLY don't want to have to change those
external links every time someone has a mind to reorganize the tree housing
the external docs...
