Using DSUM

For example I have a list of 1,000 stores located in 50 states. Each
store has its sales in the adjoining column, and the state it is
located in in the next column. I need to know the total sales by state
for the listing of stores..

Can someone display an example and formula?

Easiest thing to do is use Data->Pivot table
