Using existing shortcuts in the "Save As" dialogue

I seem to remember that in earlier version of Office (97) it was possible to
use shortcuts within the "Save As" dialogue box as a means of opening a
folder in which to save a file; typically I used the existing shortcuts I had
saved on my Desktop as a means of navigation.
In Office 2003 version of "Save As" if I click on Desktop from the "Save In"
icons and select a shortcut, instead of opening the folder to which the
shortcut points, the system now prompts me for a filename that is the
shortcut itself, replacing the name of the file I was expecting to save.
Is there a solution to this ?

Humm, that normally works in Office 2003 and 2007, so perhaps there is
something wrong with your operating system? Or the shortcuts?

What you describe has always worked for me. As Bob I noted, perhaps this
issue lies in your shortcuts or your OS.

If you'd rather add the shortcuts to the dialog box:

Windows XP: Use the Places Bar (the bar on the left of the Open and Save As
dialog boxes) for shortcuts to folders you frequently use. To add a
shortcut, navigate to the folder, click Tools, and then click "Add to My
Places".

Windows Vista: Use the Favorites Pane (in the top left of the Open and Save
As dialog boxes) for shortcuts to folders you frequently use. To add a
shortcut, locate the folder in the contents pane and drag/drop it onto the
Favorites Pane.
