Using If Then Else in a mail merge

Office 2003
I need to use the following in a mail merge and I don't know how to set it up:

(If <<spousename>> then (" & "<<spousename>>) else (" "))
We have some records where there is a spouse and some that do not have one.
I want it to look like John & Mary Smith or John Smith when no spouse.
