Using Tab to increase the indent of numbers and bullets

Dan Smith

Current version: Word XP, Windows 2000 Professional

I am accustomed (over this and the last several versions of Word) to
indenting bullets or numbers by pressing TAB at the beginning of each new
paragraph. In a bulleted list, this indented both bullet and text one tab
stop. In a numbered list, it increased the indent and changed the number to
the next outline level down. I liked that as I don't like to go to the
mouse. Below is an example of what I got after pressing ENTER > TAB.

1. xxxxx
a. xxxxx
or
* pretend this is a bullet
* and also this

Lately, the behavior has changed. In either kind of list, when I press TAB
at the beginning of a bulleted or numbered paragraph, the cursor moves one
tab stop, but the bullet or outline level remain exactly as they were. Below
is what it now looks like when I press ENTER > TAB.

1. xxxxx
2.. xxxxx
or
* pretend similarly
* and also

I have to use the toolbar button to increase the indent of a bullet or go to
the next outline level in a numbered list as in the first set of examples. I
don't like that. Have I inadvertently changed an obscure setting somewhere?
Can I get it to work the way it used to? I have tried repairing the
installation of Office XP to no avail and searched the options diligently
for some preference to change.

Thank you in advance.
