Using 'variables' in Visio drawings?

Guy Werckx

Hi,

I have over 400 pages in my Visio file.
I would like to use numbers in many of the pages and these numbers should be
set in a 'common' page or property field.

The result should be that only by updating these numbers (variables) in one
location, all the other pages have their numbers updated to this value (like
a variable).

Is this possible in Visio 2003?

Suggest that you use User-defined cells in the DocumentSheet for this.
Use the Drawing Explorer to select the drawing then open ShapeSheet.
These can be referred to as TheDoc!User.MyCell in other cells in shapes.

Thanks David!,
I am new to this. I am stuck at your last sentence. Where do i find
TheDoc!User.MyCell?
Sorry,

In the menu bar click on: View / Drawing Explorer Window, a tree view window
should then open and the top node ("Drawing 1" in a new document) being the
document sheet.

Right-click on this top node and select the "Show Shapesheet".

You'll then need to add the User-defined section by right-clicking the now
open shapesheet and selecting "Insert section..."

Check the User-defined cells checkbox and OK.

A new "User-defined cells" section should appear in the shapesheet with one
item in it, probably named "User.Row_1".

Rename it to something like "PageNumber" and the cell will be renamed to
"User.PageNumber".

You can then refer to it as David suggests as "TheDoc!User.PageNumber".

Hope that helps

Best regards

John
