using web storage space to backup computer files and folders

I want to use some of my website storage space to back up some of my computer
folders and files. Can I just create a website and import the files and
folders and then publish the website? Is there a better way to accomplish
this?

Will anyone be able to see these files and folders besides me?

Thanks,
Yeto

Your web host can see everything, and they also may have limitation on the file type that can be
uploaded. However you should check with them, at they may offer a server that allows you to backup
your PC to their servers, separately from your web space.

Thanks Thomas

I am okay with the host seeing or reading the files just as long as no one
else can. Does this mean that any webhost could edit any of our files that
they have stored?

What is the purpose of the FrontPage private folder? I am using FrontPage
2000.

Thanks

Yes, a web host can read any files on any of their servers. However you really don't want to backup
your PC to a web server. Get yourself DVD drive and use that or a second HD and use the Windows
Backup.

The _private folder is a special folder that FP uses to store files that are written to via action
performed by visitor to your site.

Thanks again for the reply. Sorry for all the newbie questions.

Just curious as to why I shouldn't use the server space I am paying for to
back up some files? I really don't care if a few people see them as long as
they don't edit them. I just fell more comfortable having some files that are
only important to me stored in more than one place. If I decide to do this
would building sort of a fake website using Import Web Wizard be the way to
go?

Thanks, Yeto

You can do, I just think it is very bad idea, to store content in a web site that is never intended
to be used as part of the web site.

If the permissions on your web account ever get messed up, then it would be possible for anyone on
the internet to access all of your files stored in your web space.

My web host actually offers a remote backup service where data is stored compressed, which is
outside of a customer's web space.

1. It is slow
2. if you need backup to get your computer up, how are you going to connect?
3. there are much better ways
