Using Word for documents getting early termination. Why?

I have Windows XP Office 2002. In creating letters etc. with Word, I have
lately been getting a dropdown "Microsoft Visual C ++ Runtime Library." It
then says "abnormal program termination" and I lose all my work. Why this
after several years of operation? Any cure?
