v-lookup function is not working

Hi guys

I am trying to use vlookup function in my spreadsheet..but it simply
doesn't work. Whenever I am trying to select the range from the other
spreadsheet and select the column number, then close the
paranthesis...its just goes away. No formula..nothing. I want to know
whether there is any function or option which I should select so that
vlookup function works??

Actually, I am facing this problem for the first time. Or else vlookup
usually works fine. Any help would be greatly appreciated

A little more detail might help...

What version of XL?

Is "the other spreadsheet" a different worksheet in the same workbook.
or a sheet in a different workbook?

Can you enter the formula manually?

What should the formula look like? What are the exact steps you're using?
