Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) Processor: Intel I will have random text like names (first and last) in a cell and to each name I want to assign a value of 1 so that they can be totaled at the bottom of the column. Is this possible?

What exactly is your objective? If you simply want to get a count of how may
'records' are in the column just use:

=COUNTA(StartingCell:EndingCell)

There may be any number of other approaches but you need to be more
descriptive of you're requirements.

Well, anything is possible in Excel if you are prepared to do enough work.

However, all of these "data transformation" operations begin with a first
step, and that is "get only one piece of data in each cell".

Once you have done that, anything else is easy-peasy.

Now the quickest way of separating those names is to save the sheet as Text,
open it in Word, replace the spaces with tabs, then import the text file
back into Excel.

This time it will come in as two columns, first name in one, last name in
the other.

Hope this helps
