Vanishing TOC

Re Word 2000 and 2002. In document with existing TOC (TOC created by me), I
want to create TOC w/modified format. I create same, press OK, and everything
that's TOC-related vanishes. Gone. Feel like I've walked into an alternate
universe, as this never occurred before. Obviously it's my problem, but I
can't find out why. Any wisdom out there about this?

After posting the query below, I experimented further and discovered, via
trial and error, that the document I described is apparently corrupt. I
copy-pasted the data to a new, blank document, where the TOC generated just
fine. Thanks to anyone who gave this matter some thought. You might want to
see my followup question, also in this DG, which deals with part of the same
issue.
