VB Error?

Art Davis

Like an idiot, I installed my old Adobe Acrobat 5.0 under Vista before I
discovered that it is incompatible. I did an uninstall, now each time I
open Word XP I get the following error message: Compile error in hidden
module: autoexec.

I removed all vestiges of Acrobat, uninstalled Word, ran a registry cleaner
to clean up all the dangling keys, then reinstalled Word. Same problem!

Finally discovered that there is a Visual Basic project that is always
there, but I can't get rid of it. When I try to inspect it, I get a "not
viewable" type of response.

Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance.

Check in the Word Add-in folder and I bet thee is an Acrobat template with
an AutoExec macro that is loading when you start Word.

To save you a bit of hunting (because the folder is hidden), open the Computer
window, paste this into the address bar, and hit Enter:

%appdata%\Microsoft\Word\Startup

Terry and Jay,

Thanks a bunch for your responses. The startup folder is empty now. (I
have done a temporary removal of the normal.dot files, etc, just to see what
would happen.

I did originally did a search on the error msg I received and got a lot of
hits. Most of them mentioned the pdfmaker.dot files in the startup folder,
so I have already gone through the process of removing them. I finally did
what I think was a "clean" removal and reinstal. I removed both Acrobat 5.0
and MS Office, then went in and manually removed all the folders that left
behing, then ran a registry cleaner to clean up all the invalid path and
file references and dangling registry keys. Then I reinstalled the MS
Office. Same problem.

When I start up MS Word with the controls disabled (holding down the control
key when I start the application), no problem.

Any other ideas?

The fact that the problem doesn't happen when you hold Ctrl to start in Safe
Mode shows that the source of the problem is in one of the three classes of
things that are suppressed by Safe Mode: the Normal.dot template, customizations
in the registry, and add-ins.

The registry has nothing to do with the "Compile error in hidden module:
autoexec" message.

It's highly unlikely that an AutoExec macro in Normal.dot would be in a hidden
module. Removing Normal.dot and restarting Word to rebuild the template would
certainly eliminate any macros it contained.

The most likely explanation is that there is an add-in from somewhere other than
the Startup folder. The article at
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HA011514521033.aspx explains how to
track down the add-ins, including some that are quite difficult to find.
