Version to Choose

Hello,
I'm currently have Window server 2003 and don't know even how to choose the
best version of Microsoft Project. I have a small growing engineering
company that needs some project organization. I would like access while I'm
traveling. Is there somewhere to go to get the info, a person to ask, a
website that helps choose, etc. Thanks......

Hi,

What you need to decide is what is it that you want from Project that
Project server 2003 does not do for you. What functionality of Project
server 2003 do you need to retain if any, and what functionality do you need
in addition to what is inherent in Project server 2003.

One option may be to simply use Project 2003 server without the 'server'
function, in other words use it as though it were simply Project 2003
standard.

Once you know what you want to get from a scheduling programme and see where
the gaps is (if any) with what either Project 2003 server or standard can
provide, then you can start checking on what other programmes are out there.

It sounds like you need:
1 A scheduling tool that you can access away from the office. (What about
simply accessing it on a laptop and then synchronise the files with your
company server.)
2 A scheduling tool that allows you to identify the loading of your
resources in the company. This is where server is helpful, but depending on
the complexity of the projects you are working on, is it possible to simply
set up a high level schedule showing resource allocations with the
allocations being gathered through a master/submaster arrangment of your
schedules?

Some food for thought hopefully.

Hello Vegasengr,

The most recent version of MS Project is Office Project 2007. See the
link below for some information from Microsoft on choosing which
solution --Project Standard or the Enterprise Solution using Project
Professional and Project Server -- may best suit your needs.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.
